About HRGD

Heterosis is widely exploited in applied plant breeding by plant breeders to the benefit of agriculture and society. Facing the challenge of population growth and cropland reduction, it is obvious that the only way to solve this problem is to improve the yield of cereal crops namely, rice, wheat and corn etc.For example, ~95% of U.S. maize average is planted to hybrids. The hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L.) breeding that was initiated in China in the 1970s led to a great improvement in rice productivity. It has been cultivated in 113 countries. The Chinese Superhybrid Rice Genome Project, initiated by BGI in 2000, focused on the hybrid rice í░Liang You Pei Jiuí▒ which was developed by the famous Chinese rice expert Longping Yuan, as the basic research object. HRGD contains heterosis related genes generated from different technology platform (SAGE, Microarray i.e.). The rice materials collected from different development stage (seedling, tillering, booting, heading, flowering, filling i.e.), and from different tissues (panicle, leaf, root, flag leaf). We also contain data of maize and wheat which collected from literatures. BIG also has an on-going effort to generate more HRG sequences.

We established the Heterosis Related Gene Database (HRGD) to integrate information and to create an analysis platform for genetic, genomic studies of the phenomena of heterosis. HRGD hosts all the expression information generated by Beijing Institute of Genomics and curates all other published heterosis related sequences. HRGD also provides a series of tools and viewers for analyzing genes function, expression patterns and their relationships. The BLAST, multiple sequence alignment tools were integrated for online data alignment. A powerful searching system is developed for users to retrieve a combination of different data types by setting various search options. Furthermore, HRGD offers instant access to the pre-computed KEGG pathway analysis and expression pattern analysis of rice heterosis related genes.

HRGD continues to make enhancements to its data quality, utility and functionality, aiming to be a powerful information resource and an analysis workbench for scientists working on genetics, evolution, breeding.

About Data Source

As an integrated HRG information resource, HRGD contains both BIG's data and data from public resources. Some of BIG data (SAGE, EST) have been submitted to NCBIí»s Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/geo; accession number: GEO8048). Data from other references have been curated manually for analysis.

All data in HRGD have been curated manually since data quality is of crucial importance for analysis. The main data curations include: Re-annotation of the data that download from references and public databases and Store the information in searchable fields.

About Tools

As a heterosis analysis platform, except for the powerful searching system, HRGD provides a series of tools and viewers for analyzing genes function, and expression relationship individually or in a comparative context.

The tools include BLAST, GO function classification system, EPFS (expression pattern filter system), Chromosome distribution, and KEGG pathway annotation system. HRGD also offers instant access to the pre-computed figures (For more information, see Help.)
